Seana Gavin creates collage landscapes that reflect the overload of imagery on the modern consciousness. She transforms found and ignored photographic images into surreal landscapes that are inspired by spirituality, natural formations, the supernatural, dreams, David Lynch and science fiction.
Her childhood spent in Woodstock, NY has also had a profound influence on her work. The air of psychedelia that followed the 1969 festival left an imprint on the town, and her personal references. Early memories of seeing ‘little people’ and other mystical experiences are reflected in the narratives of many of her images. Gavin is interested in different levels of consciousness where the rules of scale no longer apply. The relationships between objects thus change their meaning. This contributes to the sense of the un-real in her art. Her intention is that the viewer will feel as if they are physically entering an alternative reality or fantasy world. They may experience it as heaven, hell or somewhere in between.
Seana Gavin is a hand cut collage artist based in London. She completed a BA(Visual Arts) at Camberwell College of Art after training at Chelsea School of Art. Her work has been featured in magazines including Twin magazine, Under/Current, Sang Bleu, Korean Dazed & Confused, www.dazeddigital.com and anothermag.com. Gavin has pieces in the permanent art collection at Dean Street Townhouse and Soho Beach House Miami, alongside artists including Peter Blake, Tracey Emin, Mark Titchner, Jose Parla and Elizabeth Peyton. She was recently included in Kathy Grayson’s group show Postermat at The Hole Gallery in NYC. Which was also brought to London in April as part of the Dazed Live Event at Protein Gallery.
